. and tonight they are showing. this mitt romney is winning among voters who say electability and the economy are their top priorities. and more than half of illinois voters tell us the economy is their number one issue. our exit polls show rick santorum is the top choice of, quote, very conservative voters. but when it comes to strong supporters of the tea party, mitt romney has a slight lead. we'll go into the numbers in more detail in just a moment. illinois is the biggest primary prize since florida. 54 delegates up for grabs tonight. but rick santorum is eligible to win but 44 of them. paper work problemsy the again. we are also hearing about trouble with some those ballots. steve brown has the latest on that and more from our exit polls coming up in just a moment. first to carl cammeron. campaign carl in illinois. it really sort of sounds like the expectations game wrapped up in what the two candidates are saying today and they tell a lot of the story. >> when candidates begin to make predictions and talk about the outcome, it's usually a pretty good sign of what they expect. in this ca

that with every single character, john mccain, mitt romney and barack obama and hillary clinton and john edwards. so, you know, we occasionally, in the last couple weeks, have heard criticism from people who say the book was some left-wing democratic thing. if you go back and read the book, we pulled no punches throughout the book, nor did we try to be hitting everybody mercilessly. we tried to show a balanced portrait of everyone. that included sarah palin. to mark's point, that meant talking to everybody in mccain and palin world who had a lot of contact with her, people who loved her, and people who had less positive feelings about her by the end of the campaign. and we took that all into account. that's what we do. >> mark, let me ask you a more broad question. why the movie focuses only on sarah palin when there was such an exciting story on the other side as well. >> excellent question. hbo wanted to make a two-hour movie. and in two hours, you can only tell one story. they originally wanted to tell the story of the president and hillary clinton and their titanic battle for the nomination.

and everyone thought romney would be declared the winner out of virginia immediately. it was only him on ron paul on the ballot. this is sort of a nice little momentum shift for gingrich to be able to be declared the winner. we don't have any results in this yet. that basically looks like he's running pretty strong there. >> ifill: newt gingrich said in a refreshing refreshingly obvious comment this week if he couldn't win in his home state he's no longer a credible candidate. is he a credible candidate? >> i don't think we know yet whether he is. it will depend down the line tonight on a number of other contests. at the bare minimum he had to win georgia to be taken seriously to get to the other states whether it's oklahoma, ohio, tennessee and mississippi, and alabama. i would say this would be a huge embarrassment. this was absolutely necessary but it's a sufficient reason that the former speaker is a top tier candidate. >> he actually campaigned in georgia too. it wasn't like romney didn't spend any time in massachusetts but he's likely to win his home state later tonight. gingrich actua
